Installing a TKO / Tremec Manual Transmission Conversion into a 1967-1969 GM F-Body
Now available! 5sp console inserts! $25.00! They’re here!
The transmission will fit in the tunnel without additional modifications. The stock box-style crossmember (TH350) won’t work. The issue is that the stock crossmember won’t slide rearward far enough due to the floor design. You’ll need to get one of our replacements ($150.00). Or, a TH400 crossmember will work if you modify the trans-mount tab by cutting it off, and re-welding it on the rearward side of the crossmember.
These new TKO-500/TKO-600s have a shifter location that works GREAT with your stock console. No need to move it anymore! The 16.75” shifter location that comes with the trans is all you need. It is true that the shifter is centered in the tunnel, whereas your stock shifter was offset a bit to the left. However, that is not a problem, and the TKO shifter location works just fine.
Tunnel modification; You will not have to do anything significant to the tunnel, however, you will have to trim the existing shifter opening a bit as shown in these pics (forthcoming).
Mike Forte has designed a custom shifter just for the 67-9 F-body cars. It puts the shifter bar right where the Muncie shifter bar is. See more about this shifter here. It is a bit smaller in size compared to the Hurst billet alum shifter that comes on the TKO line now, which means you will have to trim less from the stock shifter opening in the tunnel.
The TKO transmission has a C6 output shaft that will require a C6 slip yoke to be installed onto your driveshaft, and the driveshaft will need to be shortened by about 2”.
